Well done to all for making such a huge effort to walk to school as part of our Green Schools Travel Initiative. We had a visitor from Jennifer from Green Schools who kindly completed scooter workshops with 1st - 3rd class. A great day was had by all!
Scoot to School Week ran from 22nd - 26th March. As part of our travel theme we are making a special effort to scoot, walk or cycle to school and the children did not disappoint this week!
As well as scooting to school we also completed some activities on yard. The super glide challenge was great fun!! On Friday 10th January members of the Green School Committee travelled to The Lifetime Lab in Cork City. It is also known as the Old Cork Waterworks Experience. We had a fantastic day attending a water workshop run by Green School Ireland. We picked up many tips to help us complete our water theme as well as meeting other schools and discussing different ideas.
We are currently in the process of renewing our green flag on the theme of water so we held our Water Action Day to coincide with World Water Day on the 22nd March. It was a fantastic day filled with lots of activities and the whole school wore blue to mark the event. Our mascot led us in a 6km walk through the village of Whitegate and a lot of children even carried bottles of water in backpacks to raise awareness of the lack of water in developing countries. Each class completed water experiments and lessons based on the theme of water. We also had a fun water relay and played some games. Any water that was used for the games was used to water the plants when we were finished!! It was a very successful day and the children should be very proud of themselves! We also held a Water Poster Competition to raise awareness of saving water at home and in school. Here are some of our winners..it was definitely a tough decision. Well done to all!

Whitegate NS have succeeded in getting flag 1 and 2. Flag 1 : Litter & Waste is the first theme of the Green-Schools programme. The theme is a great starting point for encouraging a sense of personal pride and responsibility in tackling two visible issues in schools and communities. Flag 2: Energy is the second theme that schools undertake. This theme looks at the steps which can be taken to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness of climate change issues. We are currently in the process of getting flag 3 for Water. Flag 3: Water is the third theme of the Green-Schools programme. The Water theme looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our schools and at home. Useful Tips to Conserve Water at Home:
